A Letter from the Vice ChairmanWithout question, 2020 has presented unprecedented challenges for our country. COVID-19 has changed virtually every aspect of our daily routines. Our customary pattern of everyday life, from our social interaction, our travel, our education protocols, and even our worship, has been altered immeasurably.
"Social distancing' and "virtual meetings" have become two very common phrases. The County has shifted many of our services and citizen interaction to virtual contacts, enabling people to conduct business with the County from the safety of their home. All of this new virtual information can be obtained on GlynnCounty.Org.
Even under these extraordinary circumstances, our County staff, and particularly our first responders, have operated with the highest level of professionalism. Our heartfelt appreciation also goes out to our hospital staff, doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers who have put themselves in harms way to address our healthcare needs.
As of this writing, unfortunately, 96 people have died from COVID-19 related causes in Glynn County. Our continued thoughts and prayers are with every family affected by this pandemic. We should be thankful that our community has fared better than most. The disciplines which have been put in place have worked. With the discovery and production of a vaccine, we can be assured that, "this too shall pass", and we can put the uncertainty that COVID-19 has created behind us.
However, something we should not put behind us is the horrific event our community experienced on February 23, 2020. Words cannot express the profound sorrow and regret felt by all of us for the death of Ahmaud Arbery. Our thoughts and prayers will remain with the family, especially his mother and father.
Across the nation we have seen Americans peacefully exercising their First Amendment Constitutional Right to protest. On the other hand, many communities have experienced unlawful conduct, rioting, and looting. I believe the leadership, communication, and transparency by our churches, ministers, local leaders, and government have prevented this kind of lawlessness from occurring in our community. I would like to express my profound thanks for the leadership demonstrated by those individuals.
Controversial issues will assuredly arise, but we must remain committed to being a family. Because of that commitment, Glynn County continues to be a wonderful place to live, work, and serve.

Animal Control Ground BreakingOn Wednesday, September 30th, the Glynn County Board of Commissioners hosted a Ground Breaking for the new Animal Control Facility at 190 Carl Alexander Way. Speakers at the event included Chairman Micheal Browning, Commissioner Bob Coleman, and Animal Control Manager, Tiffani Hill. Each speaker noted that the success of this project cannot be attributed to just one person or even a small group of persons. Commissioners, past and present, County staff, non-profit organizations, volunteers, and citizens, all played a role in bringing this long discussed project into fruition. Further, all played a role in ensuring it is built with safety and health at the forefront of it's design, for not only the animals but also the Animal Control Officers. The construction of the new 15,369 sq. ft. facility is scheduled to be completed May 2021.

Website Re-DesignThe Glynn County Information Technology and Communications Departments have spent the past five months revamping and redesigning the Glynn County Website. The updated website is based primarily on data which shows frequently visited and searched information. The historically top searched pages will be highlighted on the homepage of the website, for easier access. Some additional updates include a modern visual layout, an improved calendar on the homepage, and reorganized main menus. All of the design updates aim to create a more user friendly website for residents and visitors to find and have access to County information. The new fresh, contemporary design of the site captures Glynn County’s progressive, vibrant culture. It is set to launch in late October of this year.

Fire Rescue Stays Proactive in Training EffortsFive new Glynn County Fire Rescue recruits took their Oath of Office on the morning of Friday September 25th. This is just the start of the journey in their new careers. On September 28th, four of the five recruits left for the Georgia Public Safety Training Center (GPSTC) to complete the Basic Firefighter Training Course. During an eight week period, the recruits will be trained to the NPQ Firefighter Level I and will leave the training as Certified Firefighters in the State of Georgia. Leading up to the recruits' departure, the Glynn County Fire Rescue team spent a month preparing the recruits for the academy. This pre-training included intense physical fitness, rapid dressing, ropes and knots, hose training, and firefighter survival. Historically, this additional training has resulted in the Glynn County recruits performing notably well while at the academy and even receiving awards recognizing their skills and performance.

A major component of the Firefighter Level 1 training focuses on Hazardous Materials. This training continues through the career of a firefighter. Glynn County Fire Rescue completes six hours of Hazmat training annually. This year's training included setting up a decontamination tent. The purpose of this specific training was to ensure that all personnel are familiar with the proper set up, should an emergency situation involving hazardous materials occur. Hazardous Materials incidents are not common, particularly those requiring decontamination. However, focusing training on high-risk, low-frequency events ensures that the Fire Rescue team can efficiently and effectively use their equipment, if the need arises.

New Police Chief Sworn InAfter serving as the Interim Police Chief since late February, Jay Wesley Wiggins was officially sworn in by Judge Stephen G. Scarlett Sr. on Thursday, September 10th.
Chief Wiggins began his service with the Glynn County Police Department in 1993 as a Patrol Officer. He moved through the ranks to Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Captain, working in the Patrol Division as a Uniformed Officer and spending a great deal of time as a Detective. Additionally, he served as the Department's Training Officer, an Internal Affairs Investigator, and the Island Precinct Commander. Before moving into the role as Interim-Chief, Wiggins held the position as the Director of the County's Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency.
During his 28 years of public service, though it may sound strange, Chief Wiggins said some of his best memories revolve around the times our community faced the stress and challenges that come along with local hurricane impacts. He says watching and being a part of the team that responded to and worked to mitigate impacts of hurricanes to our County was an amazing thing. All of the partners in the public, private, and volunteer organizations as well as the government agencies work so well together. Additionally, the community's response and support made it a very special point in his career, that he will never forget.
In addition to his service with Glynn County, Chief Wiggins is an Adjunct Professor at the College of Coastal Georgia where he teaches an Emergency Management class. He finds it very rewarding to work with students who plan to go into public safety and to help guide them towards their career.
Moving forward in his new role, Chief Wiggins would like the Glynn County residents to know that the Glynn County Police Department is their Police Department. It belongs to them, and department wants their input. He explained that, "Being a Police Officer is a difficult job, but if we can work together, we can have the most professional and responsive Police Department anywhere. I am very proud of the men and women of the Police Department, but also of this community, and I know that as we move forward, we can all work together to make Glynn County the best place to live and work."

Employee SpotlightTwo exceptional County Employees share the Employee Spotlight this month. Janet Loving and Tammie Armstrong are the internal and external face of Community Development. Together they are the hallmark of customer service and set an excellent example for the rest of the team members. Janet Loving coordinates all departmental commission meetings and community input sessions, makes sure everything is in place as needed, and presents a polished professional image. Tammie Armstrong coordinates the office staff and provides tireless advice to staff and customers alike with a friendly smile that never fades. Both ladies work well under pressure, handle themselves in tough situations, and are committed to Glynn County and the Community Development Department.

Janet Loving has served as an Administrative Assistant II with the Community Development Department for 35 years. She says when she likes something, she's in it for the long haul. The opportunity to make a difference is what first drew her to working in local government, but a tall, dark, and handsome fellow employee who eventually became her husband, certainly didn't deter her interest. Janet's best memories working with the County include anything that involves socializing and eating, particularly County Picnics and Holiday Parties.

Tammie Armstrong has worked in Building Inspections for the past 32 years serving as a Receptionist and Administrative Secretary. Tammie's original dream career was to be an interior designer, but as she aimed for a career change, she came across a Receptionist position with Glynn County Building Inspections. In Tammie's own words, "I came. I saw, and I'm still loving it!". The camaraderie is one of Tammie's favorite parts of working for the County. She loves meeting and talking with different customers and socializing with fellow employees. She's thankful for the group of people who work in Community Development.

Additional Ballot Drop Boxes AvailableThe Glynn County Board of Elections have added two additional Ballot-Only drop boxes for voter convenience. One is located at the Ballard Community Building, 30 Nimitz Drive, and the other is at SSI Fire Station #2, 1929 Demere Rd. These boxes are for ballots only and no other election materials will be accepted at these locations. The drop box at the Board of Elections office, 1815 Gloucester St., is open for ballots and all election and voter registration materials. Book Review of the MonthPeople of the Book by Geraldine Brooks
Believing that books are like old friends that must be revisited again, I reach for another favorite book off of one of our bookshelves. People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks is just such a treasure!
A modern-day book, as well as a historical book, merged into one. People of the Book is inspired by a true story following the journey of the Sarajevo Haggadah, an exquisitely illustrated Hebrew manuscript. An Australian expert of rare-book antiquities, Hanna Heath, is tapped to conserve this priceless work of art. She is able to unravel many of its many unusual secrets.
Through the many twists and turns, we’ll meet many interesting characters as Hanna is thrust into a world or forgers and fanatics.
This will definitely be a treasured book that you’ll enjoy returning to time and time again.
